GPS for an ultra-runner

Hello everyone,

Our team is looking for GPS systems that work otherwise than with mobile phone (in altitude, we lose the phones signals). The goal is for an ultra-marathon (Bromont Ultra, a race of more than 30 hours), we must know at all times where our rider is, if he follows the track and tell him where to go in real time.

- We must be able to load a route (GPX), loaded by us (where the rider is, where he must go).

- We must be able to be precise at ~10m. near.

- We must be able to transmit the position of the runner to a base (screen), we are in radio communication (CB) with this base.

- A system that transmits satellite signals (longitude - latitude - altitude), not mobile phone signals.

- Need two systems that work in parallel in case one of the two breaks. Can one system harm the other?

Is it all possible? I really need your advice, I know nothing about GPS. ;)

It's quite hard to do all what you mentioned
A navigation GPS usually is a passive system receiving exact location from sattelites and doing the guiding based on that. The precision can be even ~1m. But it does not send any data back, it does not have the means to do it.

A gps tracker receives precise location from sattelites, and DOES send back info regarding position, but has no LCD. Data sending is limited to cell coverage, though, as it does this using mobile data.

A mobile phone can do both, but the precision is not that good, especially in areas with lower cell coverage

You could use both:
- a navigation or offroad gps where to load before the gpx file. So the rider sees where he is, and where he should go
- a gps tracker that sends similar data back to the base

You won't be able to send data instructions remotely, though. Only voice instructions (CB)

FYI, gps sattelite location works just fine in mountain areas, it's just that all mobile phones use "assisted gps", meaning they use cell data/information to help locating, and usually phones have weak or rather bad gps antennas, so they rely hevily on the "assisted" part. So when the cell signal is weak/inexistend, so does their gps locating ability
